What is Bone Cancer?

Kbreast marrow cancer It is a disease that is difficult to treat. Bone cancer is one of the rare types of malignant tumors. Only one of the 100 cancers that develop is bone tumor cancer. It is possible for bone cancer to start in any bone of the body. It most commonly occurs in the pelvis or long bones in the arms and legs. Benign bone tumors are more common than malignant ones. It is possible for bone cancers to spread to neighboring organs and distant organs such as the lung. Some types of bone cancer occur in children, while others are more common in adults.

Bone cancer is the name given to malignant tumors that occur in the skeletal system and cause tissue destruction here. Cancers that occur in the bone or joint cartilage are called primary bone cancer. Primary bone cancer does not include cancers that have metastasized elsewhere in the body. These types of cancer are named by the name of the organ or tissue, such as breast cancer that has metastasized to the bone. The usual treatment methods for bone cancer are surgery. Positive results are generally obtained with early diagnosis and treatment.

Why Does Bone Cancer Occur?

In general, why bone cancer occurred is not clear. In addition, there are some conditions that increase the risk of bone cancer. These factors are;

·         People with Paget's disease of the bone, the disease characterized by disruption in the bone regeneration cycle

·         Those who have previously received radiotherapy for another reason

·         People who have had eye cancer called retinoblastoma in childhood are more likely to develop bone cancer. This is because the same inherited faulty gene causes these two diseases.

·         Patients with a rare genetic condition called Li-Fraumeni syndrome have a mutation in the gene that normally suppresses the growth of cancerous cells.

·         Babies born with an umbilical hernia are 3 times more likely to develop bone cancer in the Ewing syndrome type.

What Are the Symptoms of Bone Cancer?

Malignant tumors of the bone are often detected late. This is because the symptoms are often vague. Bone cancer usually presents with pain and swelling. These symptoms can also occur due to different reasons such as osteoarthritis, sports injury.

Mostly, mothers and fathers, whose children complain of arm and leg pain, attribute this to growth and development. However, pain caused by growth usually occurs at night while lying down. In malignant bone tumors, pain conditions often continue to increase continuously. In addition, these pains occur throughout the day. For this reason, it is extremely important for individuals who constantly have bone pain in their daily life to see a doctor without wasting time. Bone cancer symptoms The most common are;

·         Inflammation causing swelling, tenderness and redness in the affected area

·         Bone pain conditions that worsen over time and persist

·         Weakening of the bones, which causes them to break more easily than normal

·         Restriction in the movement of people if the affected bone is close to the joint

·         Persistent involuntary weight loss

·         Visibly prominent bumps on the bone

·         It is in the form of fatigue states.

Types of Bone Cancer

Bone cancers are divided into different subtypes, depending on the type of cell in which the cancer started. most common types of bone cancer; Osteosarcoma is chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma.

Osteosarcoma is among the most common types of bone cancer. It has the ability to originate from stem cells called osteoblasts. In these tumors, cancerous cells occur in bone tissue. This type of cancer usually occurs in children and adults, in the bones of the legs and arms. Rarely, osteosarcomas can occur in tissues other than bone. These are called extraskeletal osteosarcomas. Those with Paget's disease of the bone, a disease characterized by excessive bone growth, are at higher risk of osteosarcoma.

Chondrosarcoma is the second common type of bone cancer. These tumors first occur in the articular cartilage and then spread to the bone. In chondosarcoma, cancerous cells occur in cartilage tissues. It mostly occurs in the pelvis, arm and leg regions in middle-aged or adult individuals.

Ewing sarcoma is commonly seen in children and teenagers. It occurs in the pelvis, arm and leg bones. Apart from bone, it can also occur in soft tissues such as fat, muscle or blood vessels.

Bone Cancer Treatment in Turkey

The types of treatment used in bone cancer vary depending on a number of factors. Among the factors affecting the treatment;

·         Where the cancer is located in the body

·         type of bone cancer

·         The degree of aggressiveness of the cancer

·         It includes whether it spreads or not.

With surgical treatment, the cancer and the surrounding bone tissue are removed. It is one of the most preferred treatment methods for bone cancer. In order to provide a complete treatment, complete removal of cancerous cells is provided by surgical intervention. If some of the cancer tissue is not removed, the mass will continue to grow. In such cases, additional treatments such as radiotherapy should be applied. Limb sparing surgery or extremity salvage surgery means providing surgical intervention without amputation. In addition, after the procedure, people may need reconstructive surgery in order to use their respective arms or legs. In this case, in order to replace the removed bone, bone is taken from different parts of the body or the procedure is performed by using artificial bone. In some cases, it is not possible to completely remove cancerous tissues with limb-sparing surgery. In such cases, amputation of the cancerous limb is performed. Thanks to the advances in surgical methods, this situation rarely occurs today.

Radiotherapy is often used in the treatment of many types of cancer. In this method, cancer cells are treated with high-energy X-rays. This method can be given in addition to surgery, or it can be applied alone to patients who do not need surgery. It is a method frequently used in Ewing Syndrome. It is also used in addition to the combination therapy type in other bone cancer cases. In some cases, it is possible to obtain effective results from this method.

Chemotherapy is the name given to the process of using powerful drugs to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy is often used in patients with Ewing's sarcoma or a new diagnosis of osteosarcoma. Chemotherapy treatment can be performed together with radiotherapy.

Immunotherapy is a type of treatment in which drugs that target the molecule that causes the growth of cancer cells and interact with it. This treatment method can be used in patients with osteosarcoma. It is also possible to give the patient in addition to other treatment options.
